Britain’s Secret Slaves

30th August 2011| Channel 4 Dispatches

Using undercover cameras, this investigation confronts wealthy employers who have illegally retained their domestic workers’ passports. The film hears the harrowing evidence of workers brought into Britain – usually over the summer months – who are forced to work for up to twenty hours a day, seven days a week, sometimes for a few pence an hour, and often facing physical and verbal abuse. Children as young as eleven are trafficked into Britain to work as unpaid servants. Most shocking of all are the stories of workers abused and exploited by foreign diplomats, who claim legal immunity when challenged. According to AntiSlavery International, this amounts to legalized slavery in the UK.
